Things to do in Nottingham with a difference

There are some amazing things to do in Nottingham . This friendly city on the fringes of Sherwood Forest has something for everyone, from history geeks to gamers, adrenaline junkies, outdoor pursuits people, petrol heads, shopaholics, foodies, and those who just love a good day out. Nottingham is a 'best of both worlds' kind of place. It's got all the trappings of a cosmopolitan city: cafes, bars, pubs, clubs, theatres, cinemas, a thriving music scene, great shopping, art galleries, loads of live events, and impressive attractions like the City of Caves. It's also under an hour's drive from some stunning nature reserves and country parks, including the Attenborough Nature Centre, Sherwood Pines, Woollaton Hall, and Clumber Park. Then you've got the whole men in tights thing of course! Unsurprisingly, archery is a big deal here. Nottingham was the first city in Great Britain to host the annual European Archery Championships.

Are you a local or just visiting Nottinghamshire?

Here's why I'm asking: if you're just visiting and only have a day or two to spend in the county, making a plan that includes a couple of fun activities rather than trying to do everything is a good idea. If you're a local, you'll already know that you'll be pushed for time if you attempt to do Rufford and Nottingham Castle in one day.

If you're just visiting and want an awesome experience without leaving Nottingham city centre, escape games are a great place to start. The live gaming craze is getting bigger and bigger. If you like immersive experiences that revolve around solving puzzles, clues and mysteries, this is the challenge for you.

Escapologic® is Nottingham's finest escape rooms. Now that's a pretty bold statement but I'll back it up by telling you that each room (I know because I've played all of them) is fantastically themed. Every room is designed and dressed down to the last detail. Almost like a film set. This isn't just one of the most fun things to do in Nottingham . It's also one of the most absorbing and engaging. You'll completely forget about everything outside of the room for an hour.

The idea behind Escapologic® is brilliantly simple. One Team. One Room. One Hour. One Goal. You play in teams of 2-5. The goal is to work out how to exit the room, which is locked. There's no clear way out, you have to find your way through, a little like a maze.

You need a solid team around you to win. You can do an escape room with just two people but five is best because you might need people in different areas, looking for the next item or clue that will get you one step closer to the exit.

For some people an escape game is simply that: a game. For others, it's very real! A really good, well-executed escape room will play with your mind because it creates a convincing atmosphere. Sound effects and visuals combined with the theming of the room make it seem like a real life scenario. It could be something as simple as the dripping of a tap or the laugh of a child. This is so much more mentally and physically intense and engaging than simply watching a film or playing a video game. This time, you're the stars. You're on a mission to find a way to exit before your 60 minutes are up and the room wins.

Each room has its own backstory. You might be on a quest to discover what happened to a great adventurer. You could be tasked with saving a vital sample from a chemical facility in a city that's been rocked by an earthquake. Or you could have an unforgettable encounter with The Butcher! The room you play will have its own set of puzzles, props and clues. Don't be fooled into thinking it's just a matter of finding stuff. That would be too easy. When you find what you need you'll have to work out what you need to actually use it for. There might be a key but where's the lock? You could locate a tool but when will you need to use it? All the answers are hidden away in there. You have to find them.

Escape Games

Great for stag, hen parties, works groups and so much more

There are plenty of exciting outdoor things to do in Nottingham. You've got Go Ape and cycle trails winding through Sherwood Forest, quad biking at Nottingham Driving, and fun events like Stag & Hen It's a Knockout on Saturdays. Then there are indulgent treats aimed at hen parties, like pamper sessions at lavish urban beauty salons, afternoon tea at posh hotels, dance classes, gin tasting, and cocktail making.

But what if you want something different that will really blow everyone away?

As I mentioned before, an escape room is a team effort. That's what gives it universal appeal. As well as being great fun and exciting, this is something that instantly bonds a group and gets them to pool their talents to smash a common goal. If you want to bond a group in one hour, this is a genius way to do it. While we're on the subject of time, the fact that this is an hour-long activity makes it great for works groups. You can do the team building thing without having to be out of the office for a full day. It's also an indoor activity so you don't have to worry about the notoriously unpredictable British weather ruining it!

When it comes to things to do in Nottingham with a difference, an escape room is difficult to top. Unique? Yes. Unforgettable? Definitely. Let's have it right; you're not going to forget the time you all got locked in a subterranean room and had to race against time to find the answers and get out! It's just not the kind of thing you do every day. And that's why everyone is going so crazy for escape games.
